"Oh My God!" And Other Vain Things...

Exodus 20:7

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain." English Standard Version

"You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name." New Living Translation

vain VAIN, a. [L. vanus; Eng. wan, wane, want.]  (Empty, Worthless, Having No Subtance, Fruitless, Ineffectual, having no effect, False).

The common American English Phrase "Oh My God!" is often used when surprised or as an exclamation in speech. Why would this be an inappropriate way to use the name of God?

It's an inappropriate way to use any name. "Oh my Darrell! Look at this mess kids, clean it up!"

A name should be used when speaking to, or referring to, an individual. "Darrell, would you pass the mustard please?" "Oh, I know Darrell. He lives in Texas."

Along these same lines, we would also want to be cautious how we refer to Darrell. Even if we are using the name appropriately, to refer to him; we would want to refer to him accurately.

"Darrell is always struggling to keep up, and he never really gets any work done on time." This is an inaccurate way to describe Darrell at work.

Likewise, when referring attributes to God, we would want to use the same thought. "This was an act of God!" is not accurate to use in the face of devastation. God did not "allow" or "permit" a storm to kill 100 people. It was not His judgment or will. He was not trying to teach anyone a lesson.

John 10:10
English Standard Version The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

James 1:17
English Standard Version Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

All the sin in the world has already been judged, one and for all, on the Cross of Calvary, in His son Jesus. There is NO human on earth that will go to hell because they lied, stole, or murdered. There is no sin being actively judged by God today.

However, we have an enemy. Until this earth is completely done away with, after the rapture, after the 7 year tribulation, after the 1,000 year reign of Christ... the enemy is here and he is evil, and he attacks. ALL evil, stealing, killing, destroying come from him.

There is also the fact that this earth is groaning for the son's of God to be revealed. And the earth itself is tearing apart in these last days.

There is a Godly judgment coming, but it's not for us. It's for Israel and the inhabitants left after the rapture. It is for any left that have rejected the Son of God.

So let's never again blame God for sin, sickness, or destruction. And let's use his name accurately when we use it.

Those are my thoughts today.
