I Collect Churches

So I have a confession...

I have a strange hobby. Some people collect toys, cars, stamps. Some people visit museums, zoos, arboretums.

New Life Church, in Rathdrum Idaho

I... collect church experiences.

I visit churches and collect insights on the differences between them, leadership styles, music styles, facility choices, and the overall experience. I collect pastoral teaching and teaching styles. I collect theology and theological differences.

I didn't know it was a hobby at first. I thought I was just "looking for a home church", or looking for something I hadn't found yet. I thought I just hadn't found my place...

Some of that is true. But really, I somewhat accidentally turned studying church into a hobby. Maybe it's because I was a pastor's kid and saw some of the inside workings from a unique perspective. Maybe it's because I secretly, and not so secretly, feel I am supposed to be a pastor but I'm still trying desperately to be anything else.

Maybe it's because Church, theology, and teachings have let me down and disappointed me and I'm not ready to commit to any one thing, place, or person/pastor?

I'm not sure.

Maybe it's all those things, none of them, something else plus those and more?

This morning, I visited New Life Church, in Rathdrum Idaho.

On balance, it was one of my better over-all experiences. The outside of the facility makes me feel like I'm walking back in time to something from my youth (not necessarily a good thing). However, once inside I found a nicely remodeled entry with a coffee shop.

I was greeted warmly, by several people. However, I think they got the hint from my posture that I was uncomfortable so they eventually, thankfully, gave me my space. One thing I cannot abide is being pulled into a conversation I don't want to have.

The soundboard was on display at the back (which is the entrance) and I almost went to check it out, but I'm a first time visitor, they have things to do and don't need the distraction, so I found a seat with the family.

The carpet, walls, and seats need a facelift, but they were functional. I'd listened to the Elijah message before coming, so I knew that the pastor left WAY too many seats put out on purpose, contrary to popular church growth teaching, because he wants a vision of the future to get into everyone's head. I liked that idea.

Funny thing is, I saw why church growth teachers tell you to do that. There were about 600 seats but only about 200 people. They actually did fill out all over the sanctuary so that no row or even section was full but every section had some people. I guess that's why they rope off sections in other churches, pushing people forward. Still, knowing ahead of time that it was his vision, I liked it. The absence of people didn't detract from the experience for me. I don't know if it's because I knew the vision ahead of time or not though.

I took some notes. The message was titled: DAD (Dedicated Against Destruction)

Lesson: He learned from his father, also a pastor, that when change needs to happen you need to Cut deep enough that you only cut once! That includes when you change an organization as a new leader when you make changes to your health when you decide to change a habit or even a sin. Leave no room for error and don't make such a small cut that you have to keep going back over and over cutting, again and again, bleeding to death. Just cut deep enough that the problem is gone and you can start healing.

When we need to change, either to let bad stuff go or just to let good stuff go that's distracting us from better... Do we let the Holy Spirit cut deep enough?

Lesson: Destruction comes from false witnesses.
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.  You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?  Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.  A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.  Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Matthew 7:15‭-‬19 NKJV

What does it mean to be a False Prophet, and could you be one without knowing it?
False prophets are godly talk with worldly actions.
You need to be careful what voices you listen to and listen for... that includes inside your own head. Stop listening for someone else... On behalf of someone else... Or for another voice.

Don't substitute godly things for good things. You may "want" something, but is that thing you want or enjoy keeping you from something far greater?

Lesson: You don't get healed by comparing the size of your wound to another's. Instead of looking at what other's have, feeling either jealousy or sorrow, look at what you have and be grateful. Instead of looking at other's failures and saying "at least I'm not that bad", look at your own wounds and let God heal them so you can move on to greater things.

Question: Could Jesus satisfy the need that sin (lust, jealousy, anger, bitterness, pride, slothfulness, desire, etc.) is trying to convince you it meets?

The pastor brought his own son up to the platform and read from the book: Good Good Father for Little Ones (Affiliate Link); by Chris Tomlin (Author), Pat Barrett (Author).

Lesson: The only gift you can bring God is YOURSELF... he doesn't want your sacrifice, praise, Bible reading, or other "Christian tasks"... he wants YOU. Then, out of that flows those other things.

Thanks for reading... If you're ever in the North Idaho area, you should visit.

Valley Seasons Church Notes

Pastor JO

Heart Of The City Church

====================================
Mountains, Valleys & Plains Part 2
null
http://bible.com/events/230949
====================================
• You have to learn to live with and in the valleys.

II Corinthians 11:23-27 NKJV
Are they ministers of Christ?—I speak as a fool—I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often. From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my  own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness—
http://bible.com/114/2co.11.23-27.NKJV

•  Paul knew about mountain top experiences but he knew about the valleys. I can do all things means that I can handle both the full seasons and the empty seasons. How you handle the emtpy seasons will determine the outcome and quality of your life.

I Kings 20:28 NKJV
Then a man of God came and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, “Thus says the Lord : ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The Lord  is God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys,” therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord .’ ”
http://bible.com/114/1ki.20.28.NKJV

• Note: God says he'll fight because of what others said about Him. He will show off on your behalf to show himself as God.

• I'm in a valley season right now. I feel like God has abandoned me. I know he hasn't but I feel like he has.

Valley Of Attention
• God may either bring you to or allow a valley season because He wants your attention.
• When God seems delayed you get tempted to make your own provision (Golden Calf).
• If another human gets your primary attention you'll be let down.
• Come to Heart of the City Church and get offended. Because we're human. But what do you do with that offence? How you handle it is how you will choose the direction of your life. Offense brings pain.
• Pain.
○ If you respond to pain the right way it will make you better.
○ If you respond to pain the wrong way it will make you bitter.

Valley Of Preparation
• Jonah went through a valley preparation due to his own disobedience.
• You're somewhere in the future and you look much better than you do right now. (Song?)
KimClement
You're somewhere in the future and you look much better than you look right now! We here at House of Destiny look forward to welcoming you into our family. It is our desire to help you reach your fullest potential in your life as you grow in your walk with God.
https://www.kimclement.com/partner.php

• I'm in the season of rebuild. It's time to be stripped down to the frame, old parts removed, some replaced and others rebuilt and still others modified. Cylinders bored out for more capacity, new aftermarket performance parts installed... Powder coating to prevent corrosion... Repainted and repackaged... Ready for the next season of performance which will look nothing like today or the past.

Isaiah 40:4 NKJV
Every valley shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth;

An eye on eternity...

Heart of the City Church

Church Notes from April 29, 2017
Living Life in the Light of Eternity: http://bible.com/events/210278
Guest speaker: Pastor Bob Johnson & his lovely wife, Cindy, with us this weekend from New City Church in Great Falls, Montana!
See Message Here

Pastor J.O.

*These are my notes from church today using the YouVersion live app:

II Corinthians 4:5-16 NKJV For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So then death is working in us, but life in you. And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak, knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. http://bible.com/114/2co.4.5-16.NKJV

--------------------------- Although we may want to go home, we are renewed day by day in him and we have work to do here.

--------------------------- Philippians 3:20 NKJV For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, http://bible.com/114/php.3.20.NKJV

--------------------------- Envoke your Kingdom rights.

--------------------------- Attitude is the way we perceive life, the glasses through which we view the events and circumstances around us.

--------------------------- As glasses change your perspective, so a new way of thinking or viewing the world will change your way of being and acting.

--------------------------- Life viewed outside of eternity is out of focus

--------------------------- We were created for eternity. When you view this 70-100 years from the perspective of 1,000,000,000,000s of years... it's going to change what you do and want.

--------------------------- I Corinthians 15:19 NKJV If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. http://bible.com/114/1co.15.19.NKJV

We are to live life in light of Eternity Thoughts on Eternity 1. We were created for Eternity

--------------------------- Every desire is rooted in the desire for God. If you desire anything bad, go get it from good instead.

--------------------------- Ecclesiastes 3:11 NASB He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end. http://bible.com/100/ecc.3.11.NASB

Ecclesiastes 3:14 NASB I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it, for God has so worked that men should fear Him. http://bible.com/100/ecc.3.14.NASB

2. This life with all its stuff is temporary

--------------------------- Things that are not of God are evaporating mist but the things that are of God carry through each day off the future.

--------------------------- II Corinthians 4:18 NKJV while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. http://bible.com/114/2co.4.18.NKJV

II Peter 3:10 NKJV But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. http://bible.com/114/2pe.3.10.NKJV

3. Consider what we are heading toward -A new body -A new heavens and earth

--------------------------- Shalom: The way things are supposed to be. Nothing missing nothing broken everything while and complete.

--------------------------- II Peter 3:13 NKJV Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. http://bible.com/114/2pe.3.13.NKJV

The Judgement seat of Christ II Corinthians 5:10 NKJV For we must all appear before the judgment-seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. http://bible.com/114/2co.5.10.NKJV

4. Our view of Eternity is foundational to our life on this earth

It determines our choices Colossians 3:1-2 NKJV

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. http://bible.com/114/col.3.1-2.NKJV

Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. http://bible.com/114/mat.6.19-21.NKJV

It determines our response to trials II Corinthians 4:17-18 NKJV For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal. http://bible.com/114/2co.4.17-18.NKJV

Romans 8:18 NKJV For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. http://bible.com/114/rom.8.18.NKJV

It determines the way we live life

--------------------------- We need to live and fulfil our purpose in light of eternity. How many of your pages will carry through to eternity.

--------------------------- Hebrews 11:13-14 NKJV These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. http://bible.com/114/heb.11.13-14.NKJV

Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last. "Some want to live within the sound of church or chapel bell; I want to run a rescue shop, within a yard of hell."

--------------------------- It's time to re assess what is most important. ---------------------------

Power of Prayer (Series) | How to have a daily dynamic prayer life (Message) | Jimmy Evans

Power of Prayer (Series) | How to have a daily dynamic prayer life (Message) | Jimmy Evans

@GatewayPeople Church, Southlake Texas | My Church Notes from service today

Why we pray:

  • Acknowledge God, allowing Him access to us (generally and specifically)
    • He knocks on the door of your heart, He doesn't kick it down. You need to open it to Him (not just once at salvation, but every single day). He will reside in you up to, but limited to, the space you give to Him willingly.
    • A day without prayer is a boast against God, a day without prayer is a day without his FULL assistance, direction, provision, or  protection (to a point, one could say, your cooperation with it).
    • You can't make the play, if you didn't show up to practice.
    • We are sheep. There are no:
      • Homing Sheep (Sheep can't find their own way).
      • Pack Sheep (they can't bear burdens well).
      • Attack Sheep (they can't defend themselves).
    • You need a Shepherd to guide/lead you, bear your burdens, defend/protect. If you try to do these things for yourself, you will be limited at best.
  • Build a Prioritized/Personalized Relationship with God.
    • Dialogue not Monologue. And really, since God knows everything about you, GOD should be doing at least 60% of the talking.
    • Kenneth told the story of a man who said: "Here lies a man who knows nothing, doing all the talking to the One who knows everything!"
    • God wants Darrell time (put your name there).
    • I don't get into God's presence after I'm right, I get into His presence to GET right. Only screwed up people qualify to get into His presence.
  • Exercise Authority
    • Whining in the Spirit is not a spiritual gift.
    • God won't do for you, what He gave you the Authority to do yourself.
    • You can either be defeated or win, but you can't be both, and you must decide. He gave you the tools. He doesn't want you lifting burdens that you can't carry, but he doesn't want to carry what he told you to carry.

How we pray

  • Don't be an attention hog. Don't pray to be a religious show off or get attention. (Religion)
  • Don't babble on and on, repetitively, hoping that you'll get heard if you say it enough. (Non-Relational).
  • Pray in this manner (this is the PATTERN of the Lords Prayer):
    • Thanks Giving & Praise
      • Acknowledge his Name and Address
      • See Him for who HE is.
      • Clear your heart to see Him as He is, not as you want Him to be.
      • Thank Him for who he is and what he's done.
      • Really think about your life recently, what can you thank him for, honestly (not religiously).
    • Surrender to His Authority (Submit)
      • YOUR WILL - Seek his guidance, wisdom, direction.
      • What do YOU want? What are YOU doing in this moment/day/year?
    • Provision Seeking
      • Not just money... Favor, Direction, Wisdom
      • Set before him, honestly, your temptations, pains, hurts, wounds, needs, wants, desires... surrender them to Him. Let Him heal, change, alter, kill, or enhance what He needs to get your heart in tune with His.
    • Forgiveness and Forgive
      • Focus on His goodness and Grace in your life, then focus on what goodness and grace you can let Him show others in/through you.
    • Divine Right (Submit)
    • There are three things that he will NEVER share or let you have.
      • Kingdom - I'm not building my kingdom today God, I submit to your kingdom and your authority (Lordship) today.
      • Power - I operate through your power, not mine. I will not seek to use my power, but yours only.
      • Glory - I send all Glory to you. Not religiously, but genuinely. Not with a fake humility "to God be the glory" every time someone just wants to tell me I did a good job. But honestly, openly, direct praise to God when given the opportunity.
    • AMEN
      • So Be It - Stamp it with the final Seal of Approval.
      • There is NO POINT to pray (3 minutes or 3 hours) if you are going to walk away in the same doubt you started in.
      • End the prayer with "let it be done as you said Lord"
      • Or, "I believe I receive as you said".
      • Or, "Yes Lord"
      • something to show you are in agreement with God today.

My Comfort vs God's Will

So..... I'm going to be honest. I'm not doing well lately. I've let stress build inside me for so many months that I am nearly constantly irritated. I'm in red gas gauge, relapse sounds great, screw life, un-healthy mindset territory.

Did I go up for prayer today? No.

Why not? Because... been there done that.

I've been in a thousand prayer lines, special services, healing meetings, Freedom Classes, Kairos, Personal Ministry sessions... Mens' meetings, Coffee Meet Ups with an older male friend... been there done that...

As Jesus said to Mary... ONE THING IS NEEDED....

There's nothing wrong with any of those things... they just aren't the meal. Those are the side dishes, drinks, and desert.

The main course is, has always been, can only ever be, a living walking vibrant, two-way, on-going, relationship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit.

I haven't just been lazy by not getting up early to spend time with Him... I've been purposefully ignoring Him.

All the prayer lines in the world won't fix that.

Work problems - Pray for your leaders...

I was mad at Him because my job got hard...

Real hard...

Vietnam War sounds better than this hard...

I had it great (for the first time in my life) for two years... and it all went to hell last October.

I knew... I knew he wanted me to pray through that time. Pray for the leadership and department. In fact, I was there at JUST the right time to do that praying.

I didn't want to. I wanted to be mad at Him for making my life HARD. I said I was mad at "leadership", whoever that nameless entity is. But I wasn't, not really, I was mad at HIM for leading me to a watering hole, then letting it dry up.

Instead of praying... I tried to get out. But 40+ applications later without only one nibble... I guess I'm just here until I'm not.

Maybe the sooner I get to praying for leadership, the sooner I can move on to the next thing.

SEERS SEE

ALL my life I SEE. No jest, I am a SEER, like the biblical kind. It's a subset of the Prophet gifting.

I see everything, constantly, all the time.

I walk into any business, church, organization... a person's case files or emails.... a person's story... I SEE. I see the path. I see the answers. I see the right way to handle, turn, not turn, etc.

I get mad when I see leaders make poor decisions, or do something in a way that is ineffective when I can see (obvious to me) that there is a better way.

But... leadership don't ask me, they just decide.

Pray for your leadership BECAUSE YOU SEE

It's only JUST fully occurred to me, tonight, that these two things went together.

I get into situations where I feel like I should be praying for my leaders, but, I SEE what they should do and they don't, so I get mad at them.

In fact, it is BECAUSE I see, that I can effectively pray for them.

Huh?!

I can see what they can't; therefore, I can prayer specifically and targetedly for them and their wisdom to see into the situation and make right decisions.

Meanwhile, my seeing is getting me mad, and destroying my opportunity to pray for them (the very thing my seeing was supposed to help me do).

The enemy knows what he's doing, that's for certain. He uses the very gift that should help me, and uses it to destroy me and my opportunity.

I guess I've come to the end of myself.

I give up.

I'll start praying for my leaders at work tonight.

Tonight I went to a class by @BobHamp, called Healing: Body, Soul, Spirit - Part 1.

Tonight I went to a class by @BobHamp, called Healing: Body, Soul, Spirit - Part 1. These are my notes:

LIFE Verse Update (See post here)

Think Differently LIVE Differently

Think Differently LEAD Differently

Think Differently LEARN Differently (not yet written)

CS Lewis was a great theologian because he did not have a religious studies background, but a literary and mythologies background. Stories allowed him to dive into Truth in a way that dry study never could.

He used the word Freedom Journey... I liked that. It's not a destination. Not only have I not arrived yet, but I will NEVER arrive. Something things will be catapulted upon leaving this earth, but even then, we will be on an eternity long journey to discover more about God and more about ourselves in God.

Study is not about gaining more knowledge, it's about "what do I DO differently?"
You can see miracles and still struggle with it mentally. I do! How did he know?

While he was talking I had a strong sense of DejaVu. God deals with people in different ways, but for me; this has always been accompanied by a sense of prophetic timing. I've learned that when I have this feeling, I should pay extra special attention.
Side Speculation: No science or scripture to back this up, but my personal opinion is that these feelings are the result of the spirit (which is timeless) catching up with the soul (mind, will, emotions) which is temporal (locked in space time). Your spirit may have been ready for (or even present in) this moment days or years in advance, and you are now just catching up in real time .

Very few of our problems are knowledge problems. Most are soul/emotional problems.

Discussed three categories/classes of healing:

  1. Miraculous Healing
  2. Root Cause Healing
  3. Preventative Healing

  • Miraculous Healing
    • Some healing is instantaneous... but random.
    • Why can a prostitute get healed, go back to her job, come get healed again, and go back to her job... while a baby dies with no healing?
    • No explanation makes sense. Nothing can rationalize this, and any explanation is almost an insult to one or the other.
    • Miraculous Healing is God's Grace. It's un-earned, so it can't be explained.
    • This idea: "Just get right and God will heal you" is wrong. It's un-earned, so stop telling God how good you've been. That does not affect your healing.

  • Root Cause Healing
    • The very thing that needs to adjust is the cause of the pain.
    • So often, we focus on the point of our pain "My hand is burning and blistering, make it stop!"
    • But God refuses to talk to us about our hand in that moment. Instead, he wants to talk to us about letting go of the Boiling Pot of Water that is causing the burning (it's still in your hand, drop that now!).
    • God wants to get to the root issue, and not just the symptom. So often, the issue will either disappear, or won't be as troublesome if the root cause issue it fixed.
    • Healthy is our natural state. We go to God asking Him to heal us. We are thinking "Take me from pain to healing." Meanwhile, God has the long view. "You were perfectly healthy in Eden, sickness came, I want to make all things new AGAIN, and restore you to the Health I created you for.
    • Many times even physical pains, can have emotional root causes.

  •  Preventative Healing
    • Sometimes we cause our own injuries. God will have us do the work of exercise and fitness training , so that we can prevent issues from coming up.
    • The more surrendered we are to God, the more these issues can be clear to us, and we can prevent the injury in the first place.

Mustard Seeds and Mustard Trees

Matthew 17:20
New International VersionHe replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Luke 17:6
New International VersionHe replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

Faith = Results

WE are not the source of faith.
The mustard tree is labeled Salvadora perisica in scientific communities. The plant is classified by horticulturalists as an evergreen shrub. The mustard tree reaches a height of 20 feet and can be as wide as it is tall with low branches being very close to the ground. The leaves are oval; starting out as dark green and progressing to a light green as the tree ages. The flower is green or yellow and is found in long tendrils. The fruit of the tree is purple with pink or purple seeds. Garden Guides
More imgaes here

As A Mustard Seed... We (the Church) have focused on the size of the seed. But what if we shift that focus to AS. So often we Faith People get an idea of what we want, then go find 100 scriptures to back it up, then work it up and up in our talk convincing ourselves it will come to pass... and it doesn't.

AS a mustard seed means:

Something pre-dates that seed. It's a tree. A mustard seed came from a tree. So you had to go get the seed from the tree first, before you could plant it. Then when you planted it, it became a living Mustard Tree. The seed produced after it's own kind. The Mustard Seed did not produce an orange cow.

YOU are not the source of Faith.

Faith is not intentions (what I want God to do for me right now).

Faith is getting quite before God, listening, HEARING what he wants to do in that moment, and responding to what you heard.

Trying to make up what you want, and "believe God for it" is like trying to plant a mustard seed and to get an orange cow. You can only plant what he gives you, and you can only respond (faith comes by hearing) to what you heard.

This doesn't just mean the written word, although he'll use his written word. It means what is God speaking to you right now? Respond to that!

Trusting God

A man (Peter Lord) has his hand in his pocket, and asks for someone who doesn't know him. A lady stands up.

He says: "Would you trade me what is in my pocket, for everything in your purse, right now?"

She says: "No."

He says: "That's because she does not know me." Turns to a member of his staff, and says, "Would you give me everything in your wallet for what's in my pocket? "

The Staff: "Yes, and he does."

He says: "Why is their response different? Because he knows me, and he knows I'll give him what's in my pocket AND give him his wallet back too."

That's trust... knowing HIM.

We must come to a point where we can HONESTLY say:

"Though he slay me, yet I will trust in Him."

Kairos | Notes

Kairos - When Eternity Steps Into Time

+GatewayPeople

My Notes - This is the type of event you really need to experience, it cannot be explained. These notes below are what I got out of it. You might get totally different things. I strongly suggest you make plans to attend. It's open for all churches. You can register (HERE).

Appetite for the Eternal

The Soul (mind, will, emotions) is the place of temptation.  Our spirit was saved, our soul is being saved, our body is slowly dying now, but will be saved.

Ecclesiastes 3 - There is an appointed season for every purpose under heaven.

Physical Pain is a gift of God to tell us something is wrong with our body and it needs to heal. Ex: If you were to begin slowly cutting your hand off, your body would tell you to STOP IT! Physical Pain awakens us to a physical problem.

Soul (mind, will, emotions) Pain is the same thing. It tells you that there is something wrong. Emotional pain awakens us to our soulish problems.

Spiritual Pain awakens us to our eternal needs. In the light of eternity, good things on earth should not satisfy us into complacency, not should bad things pain us into hopelessness.

Question: Do you want God... or just what God can do for you? Am I receiving the benefits of God with Gratitude, or treating them as entitlements? If I treat God as my servant, "Do what I want... now!" any answered prayer will strengthen my sense of entitlement, and any non-answered prayer will cause a deeper sense of pain. God cannot win, when you are playing the role of boss. Without gratitude there is no relationship.

SIN: Seeking 2nd things/attachment to the wrong things. When we seek 2nd things, we loose the 1st things, and the second things are lost as well. When we seek 1st things, the 2nd things are thrown in for free.

Matthew 6:33 NKJV

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Sin is not: Breaking the Rules
Sin is: Heart Condition, Inherited from Adam

Sin is not: Bad Behavior
Sin is: Falling Short of Glory

Romans 3:23 NKJV

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

The Sin Solution is not: Better Behavior
The Sin Solution is: New Heart/Spirit

Sin came when we chose knowledge of the right vs wrong over the force of LIFE. The sin solution is not a better knowledge and practice of good, it is connecting to the Source Force of LIFE itself.

Strongholds are soulish, and can be recognized when we know that God's word says "A", but we believe "X" based on our experiences. I know God says "Healing is yours", but I believe I won't be healed... I know God says that I will prosper by following His way, but I'll just be poor my whole life...

These are the types of statements someone makes when caught in a stronghold.
I know God's Word says... But my experience says... I believe my experience.
We need to understand "HERE" from the perspective of "THERE"

God gave me a funny comparison. The difference between earth and heaven, is similarly to the difference between the 1950's Superman Comic Book, and the 2013 Man of Steel Movie.

Compare the graphics of a 1950's Comic

To the CGI effects of a 2013 Movie.

Establishing Identity/Hearing God

Story One: Deaf Guy - Summary - There was a deaf man, and a new Sign Language (ASL) instructor came in. This man was ignored by everyone, so she took him on. She came to him and signed "My name is Karen", and he signed back in perfect ASL, "My name is Karen". She was surprised. She she signed "No, my name is Karen, what is your name?" He signed back "No, my name is Karen, what is your name?" Puzzled, she began to realize that this deaf man had words... but he did not have language. He did grasp the meaning of words. Words contain images, ideas, concepts. They are containers for thoughts. They communicate thoughts. If you have the words but no language, you cannot communicate, you can only Parrot. She worked with this man until one day he jumped from his chair and signed "I GET IT! This is a chair, things have names!" And he started the slow process of learning language.

Story Two: Pastors Kid - There was a pastors kid who grew up to be a pastor on staff at the same church his Dad pastored. Do to some things mean church goes had said, there was a lie in his head that he had no real talent or ability, and that the only reason he was on staff was because of who his Dad was. One day God breaks through and tells him: "Listen, you have not gotten where you are because of your talent and ability, you HAVE gotten where you are because of who your Father is... and I AM YOUR FATHER! Because of that, no man can put you in, and no man can take you out."

You cannot think without language. Words connected to ideas are how language takes place, and it takes language to think. Babies and Dogs probably both dream images, but they do not "think" as we do. Thinking requires language.

When we struggle with our walk with God, it is often because we are "hearing" another voice, not the voice of our Shepherd.

Questions to ask God, and listen for Him to answer them.

  1. What are you saying to me today, about me?
  2. What names have I believed about me today that are not from you?
  3. What are the names You, God, would have me believe?
  4. What lie/name have I believed about you?
  5. What name do you want me to know about you?

Anatomy of a Stronghold

Anatomy of a Stronghold

  1. Event - Caused by external factors, creates a pain point in your life.
  2. Lie - The enemy took this event as an opportunity to tell you a lie about it, that you believed.
  3. Defense/Comfort - Some action that brings comfort and feels right, based on the lie.
  4. Reaction - Either other people's reaction to my defense, or a natural by-product of the comfort/defense creates a similar event to that which caused the lie, and reinforces the lie, so I go deeper into my comfort, and the reaction happens again. Thus the cycle is strong with each turn.
Example One: Financial Stronghold
  1. Event - Financial Set Back
  2. Lie - God Doesn't Come Through/Provide for Me
  3. Comfort/Defense - Seek to spend money on food/fun.
  4. Reaction - Money Spend unwisely creates another financial setback...
Example Two: Relationship Stronghold (affected friendships, relationships, sex life, etc...)
  1. Event - Rejected/Beat Up/Bullied by a stereo-type Male Jock
  2. Lie - I am Intellectually Superior to most men, and all Jocks.
  3. Comfort/Defense - Seek affection, comfort, and validation from Women. Keep no male friends. Reject sports unless women are there (like gymnastics). Get addicted to relationships with women like a drug, moving from one to the next rapidly seeking validation. Push most forms of male friendship away, in some cases feel greatest satisfaction when I take a woman from a male (especially a jock-type).
    1. Only friends are women, gay men, or men who show a tendency for favoring intellectual or artistic pursuits over physical ones.
  4. Reaction -  Men keep their distance, or worse bully. Thus, rejected by men, thus reinforcing the lie...

The Painful Event was not the problem, the lie we believed about it is the problem. If you can begin to identify each of the four components of the cycle, you can interrupt the cycle, and start a positive strong hold instead.
  1. Event - Any Event
  2. TRUTH -
  3. True Comfort -
  4. Positive Reaction -
The problem with negative strongholds, is that they create a wall that doesn't just keep bad stuff from getting in, it keeps good stuff from getting in too. It also ties you to the very thing you wanted to be free from. Saying " I'll never by like my Dad..." is the best way to guarantee that you will be!

These vows FEEL right, but are WRONG. Nobody can take down your stronghold for you. But neither can you do it yourself. You need the Holy Spirit to show you which bricks to remove, in which order, and let Him empower you to remove them one by one.

4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

Solution:

Repentance involves a change in how I perceive reality. One of the most fundamental changes in how I perceive reality involves changing the source of truth. I need a new source of truth, and a new source of comfort and protection. You may see in the natural that you are one guy in a house on open land surrounded by armies. Elijah.

Which would you rather be, that guy with a wall built around the house, hoping the enemy doesn't get in? Or that guy with a house on open land, with your own ARMY 10 times the size surrounding the army that surrounds you? Meanwhile, you keep the view unobstructed by walls, and good things can still come freely to visit?
2 Kings 6
New American Standard Bible
Then Elisha prayed and said, "O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see." And the LORD opened the servant's eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

  1. Ask God: "Father, reveal a significant event that happened in my life."
  2. Ask God: "Father, reveal the lie I believed about that event."
  3. Ask God: "Father, reveal the comfort/defense I seek after believing that lie."
  4. Ask God: "Father, reveal the natural/people reaction from that comfort/defense."
  5. Father, I confess "insert lie here" as a lie. Forgive me for believing that lie. What truth would you have me believe instead?
  6. Father, what comfort/defense should I believe/seek instead?
Walk that out... day by day, event by event... building a new positive stronghold.

Grace and Receiving Forgiveness

Nothing we every DO can result in forgiveness. Everything HE HAS DONE resulted in forgiveness. Our part is to receive.

The same thing is true for all of God's benefits. God heals, we receive. God delivers, we receive. God prospers, we receive.

When we pray for people to get healed, our part is to pray in faith, and lay hands. God's part is to heal.

  1. I take responsibility to pray in faith, and lay hands. My job is done.
  2. They take responsibility to receive healing.
  3. God's part is to heal.
I take NO responsibility for God's part. If healing comes I take no credit. If healing doesn't appear to come right away, I take no blame. THAT takes all the pressure off of ME, and puts it where it belongs, on God. "Sir/Madam, I can teach you about God, help you build faith and understand His will. I can pray in faith, and I can lay hands on you... and that is where I stop. I've never healed anybody. Not ever. Only God heals. You receive it. I can't do your part, and I certainly can't do God's. Are you ready to believe?"

The Worst Sinner EVER...

God showed me something during class today that floored me.
Matthew 27:45-54
45 Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" 47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This Man is calling for Elijah!" 48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink. 49 The rest said, "Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him." 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. 51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

Jesus had prayed earlier for the Father to forgive them (the men who were killing him), they knew not what they do. Here, at the end, when Jesus dies, there is an earthquake, and major stuff goes down... the centurion, one of the men responsible for actually doing the crucifixion feared saying "Truly, this was God's kid"... I got a picture in my mind of this man being one of the several driving the nails into his hands and feet, and enjoying it, because he took pride in his work. After all, these men deserve to die, and he was good at his job ensuring it happened. But when he has the realization that he's just killed God's Son... he has a sinking fear that he's done something wrong... that this one didn't deserve it. He's instantly changed from executioner to murderer. Centurion fear not just for his life... but for his soul. And for the first time he comes face to face with his need for eternal things. I doubt he got saved there, at the cross... maybe he did. I do think that he recalled "Father... forgive them, they know not what they do..." and I think that phrase echoed throughout his mind and heart. I don't know if it happened right then, or if it was after Pentecost and he was among the crowd that heard the first sermon from Peter. Maybe he was one of the first 3,000 to get saved? Maybe not, because he was a centurion and not a Jew. Non Jews didn't get saved until Paul came on the scene, or Peter are Cornelius house. But weather it was right there, as Jesus hung on that tree, or days, weeks, or months later... did he go back, to the spot where HE killed Jesus... did he receive that forgiveness Jesus offered. And if the man who actually drove the nails into Jesus' hands could be forgiven... couldn't you?

It's hard to say how much of the story is true, but Church History does record the name of Longinus as the head centurion at the Cross, who spoke those works "surely this is God's Son" and he because a Church leader, and fiery preacher.

**************

Another memory, this memory was more a series of events... this time of my brother.

Event(S)
Between 4-5 years old (my brother would have been 2-3) I saw a vision of a demon in our room. It looked like a normal person, until it turned it's head and it's eyes were vacant holes of black. She (the demon was a she, or portrayed herself as a she), was looking at my brother, but would turn to me. She didn't open her mouth, but I heard the words in my heart, the message was "Don't interfere, he's mine." I was terrified. I ran to my parents room when she turned back. Mom and Dad came with me to the room, it was gone... I don't recall what happened next, they probably put me back in bed, or maybe let me stay with them, although I doubt that. This was not a dream, or a fanciful memory, it happened. It's as real to me today as it was then.

About this same age, I remember telling him to stand still, I stood on a porch a little higher than him. I was going to take a large rock and throw it over his head. Unfortunately, it didn't go over his head, it hit him square on the forehead. No major damage, but it did cause a cut, and may or may not have needed stitches, can't remember.

Later, I had dreams of trying to save him. These were spiritual dreams, I didn't know it at the time. The only one I remember clearly was of him drowning at the bottom of a pool, and I ran to tell my parents who ignored me "that's nice", and I jumped in to save him, and he was chained to the bottom and I couldn't loose him. (I was about 5-6 when these dreams occurred).

My brother would get anything he wanted. Favor followed that kid something fierce. One day, we were old enough to go on our own. We were at a hotel, and we got sent with money we each had across the street to a restaurant. I think a McDonald's. He didn't have enough for what he wanted, so she gave him both things anyway. She did NOT give me both, I had to choose. I remember thinking, he get's to misbehave constantly and get's rewarded for it, I have to do the right thing and get nothing for it. I have to be the responsible one.

One more event, at ten years old a (deaconess/elderess) lady leader told me that as the pastors son, I needed to start setting a better example for those other boys (kids)... who were 13-14 years old.

The Lie

I don't know if there was a single moment, or if it just built up, I think it just built up. Eventually I decided that I was seeing things that no one else saw... I was responsible for him... I was not strong enough or good enough... why try...

I felt the need to be responsible, an overwhelming sense of not being strong enough, and a resentment toward anyone or anything that would demand too much from me.
How can I summarize this lie?

You need to be responsible, but you are not strong enough, good enough, able enough.
I began to feel unworthy to be in positions of leadership. I sabotaged any advancement into leadership at jobs, moved from job to job before I could get too much responsibility. I was called to preach at 10, but ran from it my whole life. The thought of taking the platform terrifies me. Not because I think I would be bad at... I actually think I would be great at it... and THAT terrifies me. Eventually I'll realize I'm not good enough or strong enough to stay there.

I sought solace/comfort/defense in various things. Alcohol, Women, Internet Activities, Work, Tasks...

It's paralyzed me from making decisions, or being responsible. When a woman was get too needy, I was either out, or treated her badly so that she would leave. Not on purpose, per say, but that's what I now know I was doing.

So the lie perpetuated more events, which perpetuated the lie. Women, Work, Life... I'm not good enough or strong enough and I should run from responsibility.

What is the truth that I should believe?

I have been given the ability to see things other don't see, and a passion to set them free. I am a human in a fallen world. I'm not strong enough or good enough, and cannot set anyone free. Only Jesus can set people free. I cannot and should not take responsibility for other people's freedom. I can and should allow Him to show me the problem, Listen for him to tell me what to do/say about it... and then let HIM take responsibility for the results. I lay hands on the sick, I speak healing over them... HE does the healing. I can take no credit when healing comes, or blame when it doesn't. I can't heal or set free, only HE can.

I'm sure there are other notes I could jot down, and I may come back and add them. But that's what I have for now.

#Habitation @Gatewaypeople

  • In south Africa the major church there has planted over 90 churches. They win over 500,000 people to Jesus per week.
  • They said "We must win the lost at any cost."
  • This is not just what they believe, it is what they breath.
  • Saul was breathing threats. This Church is breathing soul winning.
  • What you breath out will be what others  breath in. Like second hand smoke. Smoke can fill a room and be shared breathed atmosphere.
  • You become like God by being in His presence and breathing in.
  • God breathed on Adam and he lived. Gen 1-2
  • Jesus breathed on his disciples and they were born again. John 20:21
  • What we breath in is what we become.
  • Breath in the Word of God and the Spirit of God... then breath out into your life.
  • What are you breathing today?

Church Notes @GatewayPeople SLK 07/12/2014

 +GatewayPeople - @GatewayPople

Saturday - July 12, 2014 - Southlake Campus

Pastor Preston Morrison

Look Again!

(These are my random notes from the message today at Gateway Church; Listen HERE)
Mark 8:22
22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, "Do you see anything?" 24 He looked up and said, "I see people; they look like trees walking around." 25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

I must See and Know God for who He REALLY is! I am made in His image. I cannot be who I should be; until I know who He really is.

Preston says there are three things that most people think about God that are NOT true:

  1. You think God is boring.
  2. You think God is distant.
  3. You think God is angry.
God is omni-present, not so that he can catch you doing wrong, but so that he doesn't miss one moment of your life. He is the proud parent taking photo's of baby's first steps, times infinity! Not only is he the kind of Father that doesn't want to miss one of your games, He's the kind of Father that doesn't want to miss one-single-moment of your game/life!

This is the most important formula you will ever learn.
A+B=C
A: 1 John 4:7 God is Love
B: Psalms 139:7-10 God is everywhere
C: God's Love Is Everywhere You Turn!
Are you more concerned with who isn't noticing you, than who IS? God is watching you with great interest and passion.

Like the blind man Jesus healed. If you can't see clearly, look again. Look at the one who is standing there in front of you. Look at Jesus!
If you can't see clearly, look to Jesus! How do you do that? #BeStillBeLed! Tweet That!
See God in your situation! #BeStillBeLed!

Stop staring at what you don't know, don't have, can't do... start staring at the One who has all answers, all possession, all power to do: exceedingly above and beyond all you can ask or think! Eph3:20
